The Best Ways to Heat Tortillas

Have you ever wondered how to heat the perfect tortilla to get that fresh off-the-line taste? Keep reading to find out the best methods to heat your Mi Rancho tortillas.

1. Over an open flame.

This task may sound daunting to many, but it’s quite easy and takes only seconds. Simply turn on your gas stove and adjust the heat to medium low. Using tongs, take one end of the tortilla and place it directly over the flame. Allow the tortilla to lay over the flame anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds, then flip over on the other side. You’ll know your tortilla is heated through once it starts to bubble. Keep the tortilla warm by placing in a tortilla warmer or in some kitchen towels until you are ready to use them. While you can effectively heat Mi Rancho’s flour tortillas over an open flame, I recommend this method for Mi Rancho’s corn tortillas.

2. On a hot iron cast skillet (a Comal)

This is my personal favorite way to heat up both flour and corn tortillas. My mom has been using her “comal” ever since I can remember to heat up tortillas and it makes a big difference on how the tortilla tastes. My favorite way is to heat corn tortillas dry and to add a small amount of butter when heating my flour tortillas. Just add some butter to your hot skillet and your tortillas will turn out a little toastier than if heated without the butter. Once you’re ready, place your tortillas on the skillet and allow them to heat for about 30 seconds on each side. You will start to see the tortillas bubble up and that is how you know they are ready to enjoy.

3. In the oven

This method will take a tad bit longer, but it will allow you to heat up plenty of tortillas at once. It’s perfect if you have a large group of friends and family over and need to heat your tortillas quickly. To do so, you will need some foil. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Wrap a stack of about five tortillas in aluminum foil and place the package in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they are heated through.

How you heat and warm your tortillas will have a direct impact on how they will hold and taste when used in your recipes! Now that you know how to best heat your Mi Rancho tortillas, you’re ready to experience pure tortilla joy!
